I create and communicate through photography. Using both traditional Black and White and digital mediums I am able to document or exaggerate the world around me. In 2004 I was selected as Artist-in-Residence at Banfill-Locke Center for the Arts with a solo exhibition in 2005 entitled Waiting Ribbons.
Artist Statement for work currently in the 'Life' gallery:
In life we face a constant struggle between digital and analog. Which works better? Which is more reliable? More creative? There are no clear boundaries and no instructions on when there is too much of one way, and not enough of the other. In life we encounter a barrage of stimulation, visual and audible, analog and digital. This stimulation mixes together in our minds, changing the way we feel about, relate to, and remember situation, places, and events. Through visual art I attempt to record this stimulation and mix it together in my own compilations to create a new view of our lives, past, present, and future.
Each image I create has many layers. I combine photographs from different events, different locations, and different years together. These images are taken with a variety of cameras, both digital and film, combining new media and old. Text is often layered onto the images, using an old platten letterpress. This process creates unique images that challenge the viewer to look further into the image. The further they look, the more they might find or remember - a connection they forgot they had, a story they haven’t though of for years, or an inkling of what the future might hold.
I challenge the idea that new digital media can’t be used in combination with older analog processes in the same piece of artwork, and show that this cohabitation can be beautiful.
